Business Continuity Leader, Virtual Corporation Receives 2004 Project of the Year Award

FLANDERS, NJ, March 29, 2004 – Virtual Corporation, a leading consulting company that specializes in business continuity, today announced that its Project Management Team for Kaiser Permanente was honored with the New Jersey Project Management Institute's (NJ PMI) 2004 Project of the Year Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor the accomplishments of the recipient for their superior performance and execution of exemplary project management.

Kaiser Permanente, the largest health maintenance organization (HMO) in the United States with approximately 137,000 employees, over 17,000 physicians, and 30 medical centers, aiming to provide the highest quality service at the most affordable price to the members it serves, undertook the largest enterprise-wide business continuity program in the United States and possibly the world. Kaiser Permanente's mission was to deliver to the company's health care facilities and regional offices the ability to design, implement and maintain their own Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) plans.

Kaiser Permanente's board of directors mandated a formal enterprise business continuity program be implemented to ensure that the nonprofit organization continues to not only serve its membership, but also its communities. The total implementation was comprised of 50 individual projects and resulted in over 6,000 departmental recovery plans being written in 18 months with a team of 12 people.

For this endeavor, Virtual Corporation leveraged its proven business continuity methodologies and project management expertise to meet and exceed Kaiser's expectations for their BC/DR plans.

New Jersey PMI awards local recipients based on the following criteria:

  • Met or exceeded Owner/Client's needs.
  • Met or improved on budget and schedule performance when compared with original established budget and schedule goals.
  • Demonstrated originality and uniqueness of applied project management techniques, including innovative application of practices and methods.
  • Exhibited technical aspects and advancement of the image of the project management profession as demonstrated by effective application of the principles set forth in, "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge" (PMBOK® Guide).
  • Complexity of the project and unusual conditions, issues, and barriers requiring special management team action and performance.
